2004 LSE ETF Listings: The Early Days of European ETFs
The year 2004 represents a formative period in the history of the European Exchange Traded Fund market. Compared to the thousands of products available today, the launch calendar was remarkably sparse, reflecting an industry that was still in its infancy. The listings from this year provide a fascinating snapshot of the foundational building blocks that would eventually pave the way for a multi-trillion-dollar industry.
The Era of the Single Issuer
Based on the 2004 listing data, there was a glaring lack of diversity among fund sponsors: absolutely every new ETF launched on the LSE during the recorded months was issued by iShares.
Why were there so few issuers at this point in history?
In 2004, the European ETF market was only four years old (the first European ETF launched in 2000). At this stage, the market was heavily characterized by:
- First-Mover Advantage: iShares (then owned by Barclays Global Investors, before its acquisition by BlackRock) was an aggressive early pioneer, establishing a near-monopoly on early core index distribution.
- Nascent Infrastructure: The complex ecosystem of authorized participants, market makers, and cross-border settlement systems required to efficiently run UCITS ETFs was still being built. Most traditional asset managers had not yet recognized the threat or opportunity of the ETF wrapper.
- Regulatory Evolution: The European regulatory framework (UCITS III) had only recently been finalized, meaning the structural flexibility that later invited a flood of active and thematic managers did not yet exist.
Investment Ideas Launched
Despite the lack of issuer diversity, the investment ideas brought to market in 2004 were highly strategic, focusing on establishing the core "building blocks" of a diversified portfolio. The launches were neatly divided into two primary asset classes:
1. Equities: Slicing the Global Markets
The bulk of the 2004 listings were equity funds designed to give investors precise access to major regional benchmarks and market capitalizations. The investment ideas included:
- Domestic and European Blue Chips: Standard broad-market access was granted through funds tracking the UK's Core FTSE 100, the STOXX Europe 50, and the EURO STOXX 50.
- Size Premiums (Mid and Small Cap): Moving beyond just the largest companies, iShares introduced the EURO STOXX Mid UCITS ETF and the EURO STOXX Small UCITS ETF, as well as the UK-focused FTSE 250 ETF, allowing investors to target smaller, potentially higher-growth companies.
- Global and Emerging Regional Plays: Investors were also given early tools for international diversification, including the S&P 500 for US exposure, an MSCI Japan ETF, and a targeted China Large Cap ETF, reflecting early investor appetite for the rapidly growing Chinese economy.
2. Fixed Income: The Corporate Bond Foundation
While early ETFs were almost exclusively equity-focused, 2004 saw vital developments in the fixed-income space. iShares launched a trio of corporate bond ETFs spanning the three major global currencies:
- $ Corp Bond UCITS ETF (US Dollar)
- € Corp Bond Large Cap UCITS ETF (Euro)
- Core £ Corp Bond UCITS ETF (British Pound)
These fixed-income launches were significant because they proved the ETF wrapper could effectively package over-the-counter (OTC) corporate credit, offering investors intraday liquidity on traditionally illiquid underlying bond markets.
